Dotted Line

*** Chapter One, 18-19 Parnell Sq, T 01 873 2266. Tue-Fri 1230-1430 and 1800-2300, Sat 1800-2300. Chapter One serves the best food north of the Liffey and has a claim to be considered one of the best restaurants in the city. Organic pork, spicy duck and roast venison are among the delights on the menu and are served in the basement of an elegant Georgian house. If you’re attending a performance at the Gate, make the most of the good-value theatre menu at around E30 for three courses.

*** Halo, Morrison Hotel, Ormond Quay, T 01 887 2421. Daily 0700-1030, 1230-1415 and 1900-2200. A huge, free-standing black slab, large mirrors and lamp shades that resemble one of the Wright brothers’ flying machines form the monumental backdrop to this chic restaurant. No one over the age of 30 seems to venture in here. Munch on Guinness-and-treacle bread while you choose from a menu of stylish fusion dishes. Eclectic starters include tour-de-force blinis with smoked tuna, scallops, caviar and wasabi crème fraiche.

*** 23 at the Gresham, Gresham Hotel, O’Connell St, T 01 817 6116. Mon-Sat 0730-1000, 1200-1430 and 1730-2230. Austere table settings, black floors and minimalist wall decorations combine to create an ultra-cool interior that’s in stark contrast to the Gresham’s predominant style (which is rather like Titanic just before it sank). As a place to eat modern Irish cuisine, however, 23 is gaining an enviable reputation. The lunch/early evening menu is good value at three courses for E23.

** Café Royale, Royal Dublin Hotel, O’Connell St, T 01 873 3666. Daily 1230-1430 and 1800-2230. Adjoining the hotel bar is a brasserie-style restaurant that’s usually busy but never frantic. Dubliners flock here for decently priced meals and the assurance that nothing scandalously minimalist will appear on the plate. Hearty main courses are meat-based – steak, Irish lamb with vegetable stew, duck – with a couple of fish dishes thrown in for good measure. Wannabe sophisticates wouldn’t set foot in the place, but it’s mercifully free of mobile phones and no one will hurry you out once you’ve finished your meal.

** Il Vignardo, Hotel Isaac’s, Store St, T 01 855 6215. A pizza-based menu is served in a cellar-like vault that was once part of a wine warehouse. The surroundings are enlivened, if that’s the right word, by florally decorated columns.

** 101 Talbot, 100-102 Talbot St, T 01 874 501. Tue-Sat 1700-2300. The reviews posted outside 101 Talbot confirm that there is good food to be enjoyed inside this northside restaurant. Modern Irish cuisine with a Mediterranean inflection is served at reasonable prices. Vegetarians will especially enjoy this place.

* Epicurean Food Hall, Liffey St Lower. Mon-Sat 0900-1930. This food hall is full of stalls selling all manner of exotic cooked food, with tables provided in a central area. It gets seriously crowded during the day when you’ll be lucky to find a seat, but for around E7 for loads of tasty grub maybe it’s worth the scrum. Many stalls close before 1930.

* Flanagan’s, 61 O’Connell St, T 01 873 1388. Daily 1200-2300. Flanagan’s serves unchallenging food – pizzas, steaks and some vegetarian choices – at very reasonable prices. The three-course dinner costs under E15 and you can tuck into soup, garlic bread and pizza for under E10.

* The Italian Connection, 95 Talbot St, T 01 878 7125. Daily 0800-2200. Pizzas take pride of place on the menu at this tiny, pleasant restaurant, with trompe l’oeil paintings on the walls and simple place settings.
