Dotted Line

* The Italian Connection, 95 Talbot St, T 01 878 7125. Daily 0800-2200. Pizzas take pride of place on the menu at this tiny, pleasant restaurant, with trompe l’oeil paintings on the walls and simple place settings.

* Soup Dragon, 168 Capel St, T 01 872 3277. Mon-Fri 0800-1730, Sat 1100-1700. Restaurants don’t come much smaller than this place. A few stools cluster around a bar where dreamy soups are served. Soup plus bread costs around E7. Takeaway service.

** Kelly and Ping, Smithfield Village, T 01 817 3840. Mon-Fri 1100-2300, Sat 1700-2300, Sun 1100-1800. This fusion eatery serves lots of lemon grass and coconut milk but also Malay, Chinese and Japanese classics. The jury’s still out on the quality of the food, but there’s a pleasant-enough cocktail bar (happy hour 1700-2000), with huge painted murals and buddhas.

** Nancy Hands, 30 Parkgate St, T 01 677 0177. Mon-Fri 1200-1500 and 1800-2200, Sat 1200-1630 and1800-2230, Sun 1800-2200. This Irish theme pub gets great reviews for its food: a carvery lunch, bar food and a more formal dinner menu that mixes Asian and modern Irish elements.

** Ryan’s of Parkgate Street, 28 Parkgate St, T 01 671 9352. Thu-Sat 1900-2200. Above the impressive, century-old bar is an equally magnificent restaurant with marble fireplaces and a Victorian living room feel. Home-style food is served in hearty portions, and is a cut above usual pub grub.

*** Brasserie na Mara, 1 Harbour Rd, Dun Laoghaire, T 01 280 6767. Mon-Fri 1230-1430 and1830- 2230, Sat 1830-2230. The mostly seafood menu at this very long-established restaurant is innovative and fashionable. Enjoy casual dining on bare beech tables in an elegant room.

** Caviston’s, 59 Glasthule Rd, Sandycove, Dun Laoghaire, T 01 280 9120. Tue-Sat 1200-1700. Caviston’s is a small seafood restaurant offering really fresh fish dishes. There are three lunch sittings at this very popular place, so choose your favoured time when booking.

** Duzy’s , 18 Glasthule Rd, Dun Laoghaire, T 01 230 0210. Mon-Thu 1230-1430 and 1730-2200, Fri 1230-1430 and 1730-2230, Sat 1730-2230, Sun 1230-1500 and 1800-2100. Duzy’s is a relaxed venue with wooden tables, comfy chesterfields and a cosy bar. The health-conscious menu is based around modern Irish and Mediterranean cuisine, with Asian elements for interest. All dishes are served with a comforting portion of champ and vegetarians are well provided for. An early-bird menu (E18.50) is served between 1530 and 1900.

** Nosh, 111 Coliemore Rd, Dalkey, T 01 284 0666. Tue-Sun 1200-1600 and 1800-late.
