The Guildford Arms, 1 West Register St. Sun-Wed till 2300, Thu-Sat till 2400. Ornate Victorian bar with an excellent selection of good ales.

Opal Lounge, 51a George St, T 226 2275. Mon-Sat 1200-0300, Sun 1230-0300. A night out in the capital doesn't get more fashionable than this. Cavernous subterranean bar and bistro with three other bar areas, sunken lounges for dining and dancing and plenty of sexy little nooks and crannies. Comfortable and relaxed vibe despite the high pose quotient, created by the sultry lighting, dark wood decor and chocolate furnishings. The menu is overwhelmingly Oriental in flavour and decent value.

YO! Below, underneath YO! Sushi (see p). Daily till 0100. A strange hybrid of Japanese entertainment with the offer of a post-sashimi head massage or tarot reading from the waitresses who also belt out the latest karaoke favourites and take requests. Beer comes from your own private tap and manga cartoons are shown on one wall. Alternatively, kick off your shoes and enjoy an intimate bottle of wine á deux on their giant beds.

Barony Bar, 81-85 Broughton St, T 557 0546. Daily till 2400, Fri and Sat till 0030, Sun till 2300. Stylish and lively place where you won't feel like you've gatecrashed your young nephew's party. Very busy at weekends. Good bar food.

Baroque, 39-41 Broughton St, T 557 0627. Daily till 0100. Brightly coloured décor that's not quite as loud as the young party-lovers who frequent this popular bar. Usual range of trendy pub grub and a great selection of juices.

The Basement, 10-12a Broughton St, T 557 0097. Daily till 0100. This Broughton Street original feels like it's always been around and is just as hip and happening as ever. Good bistro food with a mainly Mexican flavour, it's still one of the best- value meals in town.

Cask and Barrel, 115 Broughton St, T 556 3132. Set in the increasingly hip Broughton Street part of the New Town, but very different from many of the other, more glamorous places. Real Ale, brass taps and wooden fittings.

Mathers, 25 Broughton St, T 556 6754. Mon-Thu till 2400, Fri and Sat till 0030, Sun till 2300. A welcome respite from the unremitting cool of this part of the city. Just a plain and simple bar serving good beer and outrageously cheap food (fish and chips are £1.99) in relaxed surroundings.

The Outhouse, 12a Broughton St La, T 557 6668. Daily till 0100. Under the same management as Ego night club, this small dark bar is not very plush but does fill up quickly and has a good atmosphere. A firm fave with pre-clubbers. Good beer garden in the summer months.
