Dotted Line

The Outhouse, 12a Broughton St La, T 557 6668. Daily till 0100. Under the same management as Ego night club, this small dark bar is not very plush but does fill up quickly and has a good atmosphere. A firm fave with pre-clubbers. Good beer garden in the summer months.

Pivo Caffé, 2-6 Calton Rd, T 557 2925. Daily till 0100. Czech-themed bar offering a thick slice of Prague, with pictures of the old city adorning the walls. As you'd expect, the lager is very good and the food, which is served in giant portions, is also worth Czech-ing out. Attracts a lot of students on their way to The Venue nightclub nearby so there's a buzz about the place later in the evening.

Pop Rokit, 2A Picardy Pl. Formerly The Catwalk, this cool little bar spread over two floors is mostly frequented by clubbers going to Ego and The Venue. Can be very quiet after 2200 at weekends.

The Antiquary, 72-78 St Stephen St, T 225 2858. Mon-Wed till 0030, Thu-Sat till 0100, Sun till 2400. The 'tick', as it's better known, is something of a local institution. Students come to this basement bar for the cheap food. On Fridays between 1700 and 1900 sandwiches and filled rolls are free.

The Baillie Bar, 2 St Stephen St, T 225 4673. Dark, smoky basement bar in Stockbridge. Attracts a more mature clientele and serves above-average food.

Hectors, 47-49 Deanhaugh St, T 343 1735. Sun-Wed till 2400, Thu-Sat till 0100. The place for bright young things to hang out in Stockbridge. Chill out with a glass of chilled Chardonnay, or do as the locals do and spend a lazy Sunday afternoon with the papers and a big brunch.

Bert's Bar, 29-31 William St, T 225 5748. Mon-Wed till 2300, Thu-Sat till 2400. A better class of rugby bar which attracts the more refined aficionado as well as the occasional Charlotte Street mafiosi. A pie and a pint doesn't get much better than this.

The Caley Sample Room, 58 Angle Park Terr, T 337 1006. Sells the full range of ales from the nearby Caledonian Brewery. Popular with rugby and footie fans enjoying a pre- or post-match pint with their pie and chips.

Cramond Inn, 30 Cramond Glebe Rd, Cramond Village, T 336 2035. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1800-2130, Sat 1200-2130, Sun 1230- 2130. Bucolic bliss only four miles from the city centre. Good selection of fresh fish and seafood, and good ales to wash it down. Outdoor seating in summer with views across the Forth.
