Cramond Inn, 30 Cramond Glebe Rd, Cramond Village, T 336 2035. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1800-2130, Sat 1200-2130, Sun 1230- 2130. Bucolic bliss only four miles from the city centre. Good selection of fresh fish and seafood, and good ales to wash it down. Outdoor seating in summer with views across the Forth.

Filmhouse Café Bar, 88 Lothian Rd, T 229 5932. Sun-Thu till 2330, Fri/Sat till 0030. Comfortable place to relax whether or not you're catching a movie. Busy at lunchtimes and evenings with a wide mix of people who come for coffee and chat or to enjoy the excellent-value vegetarian food.

Indigo Yard, 7 Charlotte La, T 220 5603. Mon-Sat 1100-0100, Sun 1230-0100. This converted and covered courtyard has been transformed into an immensely popular bar and restaurant. The menu is cosmopolitan (Thai, Mexican, French, Italian etc) and the food excellent. It has a good cocktail list and popular with weekend pre-clubbers. One of the places to be seen drinking in.

Mather's, 1 Queensferry St. Mon-Thu till 2400, Fri and Sat till 0100. This is a good real ale pub with a gorgeous interior.

Mondobbo, 34 Bread St, T 221 5555. Mon-Thu and Sun till 2400, Fri and Sat till 0100. Part of the supremely stylish Point Hotel, and don't it show. Popular with local office workers for a sophisticated light lunch or after work for happy-hour cocktails.

Traverse Bar Café, Traverse Theatre, 10 Cambridge St, T 228 5383. Mon till 2300, Tue-Thu and Sun till 2400, Fri/Sat till 0100. Very stylish bar that's popular with luvvies, suits and students. Excellent and affordable food served at all times, and regular special drinks offers.

Uluru, 133 Lothian Rd, T 228 5407. Mon-Thu till 2400, Fri and Sat till 0100, Sun 1600-2400. Relaxed, laid-back bar with an Aussie theme. Good place to chill during the day but gets busy at weekends. Cheap lunch specials and good range of cocktails if you're on the razz.

Bennet's Bar, 8 Leven St, T 229 5143. Mon-Wed till 2330, Thu-Sat till 0030, Sun till 2300. Next to the King's Theatre. Marvel at the carved wooden gantry, the stained-glass windows, the huge mirrors, and the glass-topped tables with inlaid city maps while you enjoy a great pint of beer and perhaps some good old-fashioned (and cheap) food (served in the back room at lunchtime only). One of the city's finest traditional pubs.

The Canny Man's, 237 Morningside Rd. Mon-Sat till 2400, Sun till 2300. Part museum/part pub that's been serving good real ale and a vast smorgasbord of sandwiches in most interesting surroundings since Victoria was on the throne, and probably to the same bunch of regulars.
