The Canny Man's, 237 Morningside Rd. Mon-Sat till 2400, Sun till 2300. Part museum/part pub that's been serving good real ale and a vast smorgasbord of sandwiches in most interesting surroundings since Victoria was on the throne, and probably to the same bunch of regulars. Human Be-in, 2-8 West Crosscauseway, T 662 8860. Daily till 0100. Bein' so close to the Uni it gets its fair share of lecture dodgers who tend to hog the comfy booths, but if you can claim one it's worth staying to sample the tasty snacks or more substantial meals and enjoy the relaxed ambience. The Pear Tree House, 38 West Nicolson St, T 667 7533. Mon-Wed and Sun till 2400, Thu-Sat till 0100. Near the University, so a favourite student haunt, this was once a focal point for the city's crusties but now the occasional suit can be spotted. Boasts Edinburgh's only decent-sized beer garden, which is not only packed in summer, but also populated at other times of the year. Also serves amazingly cheap food. Bar Java, 48-50 Constitution St, T 467 7527. Mon-Wed 0700-2400, Thu and Fri till 0100, Sat and Sun 0800-2400. Groovy little bar that opens early for breakfast, has a beer garden for those rare warm summer evenings, good food, live music and even rooms for B&B upstairs. iso-bar, 7 Bernard St, T 467 8904. Daily till 0100. Looks like a mini IKEA from the outside but inside its actually quite comfy, friendly and the food is good value. King's Wark, 36 The Shore, T 554 9260. Mon-Thu till 2300, Fri and Sat till 2400, Sun till 2300. One of the oldest pubs in Leith, dating back to the early 17th century, and it appears not to have changed much. Real historical atmosphere and some excellent food (mid-range). Old Salt, 17 Albert Pl, Leith Walk. Right on the border between Edinburgh and Leith, this old boozer opens at 0500 for postal workers, but at weekends is a curious mix of loved-up clubbers winding down and posties gearing up for the days delivery. The Pond, 2 Bath Rd, T 467 3825. Mon-Thu 1600-0100, Fri-Sun 1400-0100. Make no mistake, this place looks weird, but makes for an interesting drinking experience, and also effortlessly laid-back. Bit out of the way through an insalubrious part of Leith, but worth it.
