The cheapest and quickest route to Edinburgh from Ireland and Europe is by plane. From England the cheapest way north is by coach: the London to Edinburgh journey takes around eight hours, and from Newcastle its 1½ hours. There are fast and frequent rail services from London's King's Cross and regional cities in England to Edinburgh Waverley. Journey time from London is only about 4½ hours, but this can be a relatively expensive way to travel and, though there are various cheap offers available, these need to be booked well in advance.
Getting around Edinburgh is straightforward. This is a city on a human scale and most of what youll want to see lies within the compact centre which is easily explored on foot. However, Edinburgh is also a hilly city and a full days sightseeing can leave you exhausted. An excellent way to see the sights and avoid wearing out shoe leather is to take one of the city bus tours, which allow you to hop on and off any bus at any time.
