L Apex International Hotel, 31-35 Grassmarket, T 300 3456, F 220 5345, http://www.apexhotels.co.uk 175 en suite rooms. Large, recently converted former University building in the heart of the Old Town. Top floor rooms with Castle views are more expensive but worth the extra. Metro bar-restaurant on the ground floor is good for a drink. Recently opened, but not visited at the time of writing is the Apex City Hotel, 61 Grassmarket, T 243 3456, which is aiming to be more upmarket and therefore more expensive.

L Crowne Plaza Hotel, 80 High St, T 557 9797, F 557 9789, http://www.crowneplazaed.co.uk 238 en suite rooms, three with disabled facilities. Slap bang in the heart of it all, half- way between the Castle and Holyrood Palace, this monster of a hotel has been sympathetically designed to blend in with the surr- ounding architecture. Plush and with most of the trimmings you'd expect at this price, but perhaps a bit impersonal. Very popular location, with parking, fitness suite and pool, restaurant and bar.

L Scotsman Hotel, North Bridge, T 556 5565, http://www.scotsman hotel.co.uk 68 rooms and suites. The former offices of The Scotsman newspaper have been transformed into this state-of-the-art boutique hotel. Each room is distinctive and has been furnished with great attention to detail, with original art, DVD and internet and its very own Edinburgh Monopoly board. Services and facilities include valet parking, screening room, bar, brasserie and restaurant, breakfast room, private dining rooms and a Health Club and Spa with a stainless steel pool. This represents the highest standards of style and luxury the city has to offer, but it comes at a price, especially the Penthouse Suite which will set you back nearly a grand for the night. Off-peak rates are available from as little as £70 per person.

L The Witchery by the Castle, Castlehill, Royal Mile, T 225 0973, F 220 4392, http://www.thewitchery.com">http://www.thewitchery.com Upstairs from the acclaimed restaurant are six suites which really have to be seen to be believed. Regularly featured in all the posh travel mags as the most romantic place to stay, Cosmo even went as far as to describe The Witchery as one of 'seven won- ders'. Each suite is a vision of Gothic theatrical excess, with velvet drapes, four-poster beds, 18th-century oak paneling, marble bath- rooms and more antiques and historic portraits than you'd find in the average museum. Additional touches include a complimentary bottle of champers, home-made cookies, DVD and CD library. Four new suites have recently been opened across the road in 17th- century Sempill's Court. Accommodation in Scotland's capital just doesn't get any sexier than this, so make sure he or she is worth it.

B Bank Hotel, 1 South Bridge, T 556 9043, F 558 1362, http://www.festival-inns.co.uk Nine individually themed rooms, each based on a famous Scot, from the poetry of Robert Burns to the designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and all tastefully done. Well-situated in the haggis belt. Hotel reception is in Logie Baird's bar at street level and this is also where breakfast is served. A good deal for this part of town.

B Jurys Inn, 43 Jeffrey St, T 200 3300, F 200 0400, bookings@ jurysdoyle.com 186 en suite rooms. Huge converted office block. Functional but comfortable and an unbeatable location close to the Royal Mile, Princes Street and Waverley Station. Some rooms have been adapted for disabled visitors. On-street parking. Cheaper during the week (Sunday-Thursday) when the stags and hens have departed.

B Tailors Hall Hotel, 139 Cowgate, T 622 6801, F 622 6818, tailors@festival-inns.co.uk 42 en suite rooms. Above the busy Three Sisters pub, so quiet hideaway this ain't. Aimed at the late and loud crowd who take advantage of the disco downstairs and the courtyard seating. Don't expect much sleep during the Festival. Even better value if three or four share a room.

C Hotel Ibis, 6 Hunter Sq, T 240 7000, F 240 7007. 99 en suite rooms. Part of the Accor group, this modern hotel is handy for everything but doesn't exactly blend in with its historic surroundings. Continental breakfast £4.95 extra. Low season discounts. Characterless but very good value.
