A cut above the average curry house, offering varied southern Indian cuisine with a strong vegetarian emphasis. Their set lunch and pre-theatre dinner are particularly good value at £9.95. BYOB.

££ Viva Mexico, 41 Cockburn St, T 226 5145. Mon-Sat 1200-1400, 1800-2230, Sun 1800-2200. This Mexican restaurant has been around longer than most and it's easy to see why – definitely one of the top two in town. The reliably filling food is spicy and authentic, featuring such standards as pollo en chipolte and rice, black beans and tortillas.

£ Kebab Mahal, 7 Nicolson Sq, T 667 5214. Sun-Thu 1200-2400, Fri and Sat 1200-0200. No frills Halal café- takeaway serving good kebabs and curries for under a fiver. You wouldn't bring a first date here or linger all night but who cares at these prices? No alcohol served on the premises. Attracts local Asian families and impecunious students in equal measure.

£ Khushi's, 16 Drummond St, T 556 8996. Mon-Thu 1200-1430, 1700-2030, Fri/Sat till 2100. The city's first ever Indian restaurant has been serving simple, tasty curries to poor students ever since India’s independence. Basic decor but you can't argue with such great value. Service is speedy so good for a quick meal. Several vegetarian options. BYOB and no corkage charge.

££ The Sheep Heid Inn, 43 The Causeway, Duddingston, T 656 6951. Mon-Wed 1100-2300; Thu-Sat till 2400; Sun 1230-2300. Food served Mon-Thu 1200-1500; Fri and Sat 1200-2100; Sun 1230-2000. Great place to relax with a pint on a sunny after- noon after a walk up Arthur's Seat, which is why it's so busy, espec- ially for their hearty Sunday lunches.

£££ Bellini, 8b Abercromby Pl, T 476 2602. Tue-Fri 1200-1430, 1830 till late; Sat 1800 till late; Sun 1230-2100. Superior Italian food served in elegant Georgian surroundings. Those who prefer a touch of sumptuous exclusivity about their dining experience take note: few know about this place save the New Town culinary cognoscenti. A great place for a slow, lingering dinner, with, friendly, attentive service. Lunchtime two-course special is a snip at £8.90.

£££ Café Royal Oyster Bar, 17a West Register St, T 556 4124. Daily 1200-1400, 1900-2200. An Edinburgh institution and much-loved by numerous celebrities. The ornate tiles and stained-glass windows create an atmosphere of Victorian elegance and opulence. There are better (and cheaper) seafood restaurants in town but none are as classy. The adjoining Bistro Bar is just as impressive and less damaging on the bank balance.

£££ Le Café Saint-Honoré, 34 Thistle St La, T 226 2211. Mon-Fri 1200-1415, 1700-2200, Sat 1200-1415, 1800-2200. Tucked away in a little side street, this place couldn't be any more French. An authentic corner of Paris in the heart of Scotland's capital. The food is seriously French, too, and seriously priced, but seriously wonderful; tender, plump meat and game rubs shoulders with fresh and varied fish and seafood. Excellent-value set menu served 1700-1900.

£££ Duck's at Le Marché Noir, 2-4 Eyre Pl, T 558 1608. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1800-2230, Sat 1800-2230, Sun 1800-2130. Classic French provincial cooking married to the best of Ecossais served with precision in sumptuous surroundings. Perhaps Edinburgh's finest French? Complemented by an extensive wine list.
