The Bistro, 192 Rose St, T 225 2208. Tue-Sat 1200-1400, 1800-2200. Rose Street is pedestrian in more than one sense, but this is a culinary oasis amidst a sea of run-of-the-mill stodge. Enthusiastically run by husband and wife team, the food leans towards traditional Scots, but the real stars are the succulent steaks. Excellent value and the two-course set lunch even more so at a positively parsimonious £9. ££ Ricks, 55a Frederick St, T 622 7800. Daily 0700-0100. Of all the bars in all the towns in all the world
you really ought to walk into this one. The sleek, contemporary décor is as easy on the eye as most of the clientele, many of whom are merely here to be seen, but that doesn't detract from a very good fusion-based menu that features a nice balance of fish, crustacea and meat as well as a few vegetarian choices (spicy satay noodles with bok choy and shitake mushrooms are particularly good). Also good for a pre-prandial cocktail from their impressive list or for a big night out, especially at weekends. ££ Siam Erawan, 48 Howe St, T 226 3675. Daily 1200-1430, 1800-2245. Edinburgh's original Thai restaurant and still the best, according to many. The cosy basement ambience encourages you to take your time. The same people have two other branches: Erawan Express, 176 Rose Street, T 220 0059; and Erawan Oriental, 14 South St Andrew Street, T 556 4242. ££ Tapas Olé, 10 Eyre Pl, T 556 2754. Sun-Thu 1100-2200, Fri/Sat 1100-2230. Excellent tapas served in bright, lively and colourful surroundings. Good choices on offer and the set menu allows you to sample at least nine for £13. Also a lunch menu at £6 for six tapas. Friendly service and a good vibe but gets very busy at weekends. There's a branch in the Old Town, at 4a Forrest Road, T 225 7069. ££ YO! Sushi, Unit 5, Hanover Buildings, 66 Rose St, T 220 6040. Daily 1200-2300. New Edinburgh branch of the famous London chain brings the authentic Japanese fast food experience. All the favourites such as maki, nagiri and sashimi pass before your eyes on a giant conveyer belt in glorious techni- colour. It's bright, noisy and great fun. Underneath is YO! Below.
