If shopping be your drug of choice then a trip to Edinburgh will produce a very satisfactory high. It's a city with shops to suit all tastes, from arriviste upstart Harvey Nicks to the well-bred Jenners, the citys answer to Harrods. Those in search of tartan tat should head for the Royal Mile which is lined with shops selling all manner of Caledonian kitsch: kilts, whisky, fluffy haggis, see you, Jimmy hats and those scary tartan-clad dolls with flickering eyelashes. Any fashionista worth their low-sodium substitute should head straight for George Street which is wall-to-wall designer stores. Princes Street, once the citys main retail thoroughfare, is more downmarket and indistinguishable from too many other city centre streets (except for the views, of course). Good places to look for second-hand clothes and books, and antique art and jewellery are around the New Town and Stockbridge, Broughton Street and the Grassmarket. Victoria Street is worth a browse for something a bit different, while Cockburn Street is where youll get your fix of sex, drugs and rocknroll.
