Aside from London, Glasgow is probably the best city in the UK for shopping. Buchanan Street is the main shopping street and is lined with good clothes shops as well as some of the city's best malls. East of Buchanan Street, the Merchant City is home to many expensive designer shops, bars and cafés and a trip here could inflict some serious damage on your bank account. At the other end of the scale, The Barras market, the city's largest, in the East End, may not be the best place for souvenirs, but is guaranteed to offer a big, thick slice of authentic working class Glasgow and a chance to hear the legendary 'patter'. Close by, on Glasgow Green, the People's Palace offers an interesting insight into this city's fascinating history. The River Clyde itself has been added to the list of visitor attractions in recent years. The Clydeside Walkway, which runs all the way from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) beyond the city limits to Bothwell Castle in Uddingston , is an attempt to direct Glasgow's river towards a future of leisure and tourism. There are also trips up and down the river in a variety of craft. Also worth visiting is the Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour and state-of-the-art Science Centre.
