Bargo, 80 Albion St, T 0141-553 4771. Mon-Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1230-2400. Stylish and spacious Merchant City bar/bistro with surprisingly good food and a high posing quotient. Can be a bit empty, especially during the week. (See also ‘Eating’).

Blackfriars, 36 Bell St, T 0141-552 5924. Mon-Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1230-2400. Merchant City favourite which pulls in the punters with its vast range of international beers and lagers. Real ales, Belgian beers and a dark traditional interior. Also a wide range of excellent grub, live music and comedy at weekends and that inimitable Glasgow atmosphere.

Rab Ha’s, 83 Hutcheson St, T 0141-572 0400. Mon-Sat 1100-2400, Sun 1230-2400. This old Merchant City stalwart still packs ‘em in. It has an enviable reputation for its food and is above the restaurant of the same name. Décor is cosy with lots of dark wood panelling, while regulars include cheery, well-lunched men in suits.

Strata, 45 Queen St, T 0141-221 1888. Daily 1200-2400. Another horizontally cool but nicely relaxed bar, slap bang in the city centre, where you can strut your stuff before heading off to the clubs.

Vespa, 17 John St, T 0141-552 4017. Daily 1000-2400. As the name suggests there’s a contemporary Italian theme at this slick bar next to Glasgow’s branch of Armani. Good range of pastas to eat, and outdoor seats for posing on fine days.

Yang, 33 Queen St, T 0141-248 8484. A 3-bar venue with DJs to get you in the mood for Archaos next door or for their own bar/club downstairs.

13th Note Café, 50-60 King St, T 0141-553 1638. Daily 1200-2400. Established East End hang out attracting students and arty types. Good helpings of vegan and veggie food, and a buzzy live music venue.
