Another Bath Street style bar, with good DJs and food thats a mix of Eastern European and Far Eastern flavours. It gets nice and buzzy attracting a lively pre-club crowd. Candy Bar, 185 Hope St, T 0141-353 7240. Mon-Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1600-2400. Billed as one of the citys coolest bars (Prince William has been spotted at its sister venue in Edinburgh), this is the place to flaunt those new clothes you splashed out on in the Italian Centre. Exotic bites, pasta dishes and lots of posing - a long way from spit and sawdust. The Griffin, 226 Bath St, T 0141-331 5171. Mon-Tue 1200-2300, Wed-Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1230-2300. Opposite the Kings Theatre. Turn of the century pub (not T he most recent one) recently renovated but losing none of its style. Still the best place in the city for pie and chips and a drink. Also a good place to meet the locals. Other traditional dishes, plus vegetarian are served at amazing value. The Horse Shoe Bar, 7 Drury St, T 0141-229 5711. Between Mitchell St and Renfield St, near the station. Classic Victorian Gin Palace that is still one of the citys favourites. Its much-copied island bar is the longest continuous bar in the UK, so it shouldnt take long to get served, which is fortunate as it gets very busy. Incredibly good-value, no nonsense food served Mon-Sat 1200-1930, Sun 1230-1700 and perhaps the cheapest pint in town. If you only visit one pub during your stay, then make sure its this one. Kelly Cooper Bar, 158-166 Bath St, T 0141-331 4060. Mon-Wed 1200-0100, Thu 1200-0200, Fri, Sat 1200-0300, Sun 1300-0100. Style conscious newcomer on the Glasgow scene full of hot to trot locals and the odd celeb, so dress to impress. Upstairs is Lowdown, see below. Lowdown, 158-166 Bath St, T 0141-331 4061. Mon-Thu 1700-0100, Fri, Sat 1700-0300, Sun 2100-0300. Another cool hangout that majors on cocktails. It also does a tasty line in tapas and R&B sounds on Sundays and Thursdays. Moskito, 200 Bath St, T 0141 331 1777. A newish addition to the bar scene in Glasgow, with DJs at the weekends. Nice n Sleazy, 421 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-333 9637. A tongue-in-cheek and eclectic mix of people and music, with pre-club DJs such as Bitch School who play a mix of rock and metal on Sun afternoons and a more laid back funky feel at other times. Nicos, 395 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-332 5736. A well-known and long-standing bar in Sauchiehall St with DJs playing pre-club pop, hip hop and garage at weekends.
