Nicos, 395 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-332 5736. A well-known and long-standing bar in Sauchiehall St with DJs playing pre-club pop, hip hop and garage at weekends.

The Pot Still, 154 Hope St, T 0141-333 0980. Mon-Thu 1100-2300, Fri, Sat 1100-2400, Sun 1230-2300. Edwardian pub with lots of original features, justly famous for its massive range of malts (there’s around 500 of them so you’ll need more than one visit). They also have a selection of cask ales and decent pub grub during the day.

St Judes, 190 Bath St, T 0141-352 8800. The haunt of Glasgow’s trendy media types with fine cocktails and occasional but top-notch DJs.

Spy Bar, 153 Bath St, T 0141-221 7711. Mon-Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1800-2400. A sleek bar with lots of mirrors and wacky colours. A popular pre-club haunt with a trendy crowd wanting jazz, funk, house and soul from Thursday to Sunday. Food ranges from sandwiches and soups to more substantial fare. Monday to Saturday 1200-2400 (food until 2000).

Tom Tom, 207 Bath St, T 0141-248 2123. Daily 1200-2400. New classy-looking bar with lots of light wood and airy space upstairs, and a cosier, more snug feel downstairs. DJs play chilled sounds at night.

Variety Bar, 401 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-332 4449. An atmospheric art deco bar with as varied a crowd as the music policy and DJ sounds. Various drink promotions and happy hours with good music.

Zinc, Princes Sq, T 0141-225 5620. Mon-Sat 0900-2400, Sun 1200-2400. Terence Conran designed style bar in the elegant Princes Square shopping mall. Convenient and chilled shopping stop that serves bistro style food.

Air Organic, 36 Kelvingrove St, T 564 5201. A popular West End place to be seen in and to enjoy some of the best DJs before you head into town.

Brel, 39 Ashton La, T 0141-342 4966. Belgian-themed bar in the West End which has DJs on several nights a week playing laid-back sounds as well as hip hop and soul.
