Brel, 39 Ashton La, T 0141-342 4966. Belgian-themed bar in the West End which has DJs on several nights a week playing laid-back sounds as well as hip hop and soul. Cul de Sac, Ashton La, T 0141-334 8899. Situated in the lively Ashton La, the Sac is an atmospheric bar where DJs play a wide selection of sounds and styles but all of which are designed to create a good vibe. Firebird, 1321 Argyle St, T 0141-334 0594. Mon-Thu 1130-2400, Fri, Sat 1130-0100, Sun 1230-2400. A cool place to hang out in the West End and have food, drinks and listen to some of Glasgows finest DJs on Thu-Sun. Has the advantage of providing excellent food, especially their crispy pizzas. Itis got a Mediterranean, terracotta interior and its large windows make it light and bright as well as giving you great views of Kelvingrove. The Halt Bar, 160 Woodlands Rd, T 0141-564 1527. Mon-Sat 1100-2400, Sun 1230-2400. This erstwhile tram stop (hence the name) is one of Glasgows great, endearingly scruffy, unspoiled pubs with many of the original Edwardian fixtures intact. It is also a great place to see live music two or three times a week or watch a match on the big screen TV (unless youre supporting England of course). Lock 27, 1100 Crow Rd, T 0141-958 0853. If the weathers fine (and it sometimes is), there are few nicer places to enjoy a spot of al fresco eating and drinking than this place by the Forth and Clyde Canal in Anniesland. Good food served until 2100 and kids are made welcome. You could take a stroll along the towpath afterwards. McChuills Way Out West, 10-14 Kelvinhaugh St, T 0141-576 5018. Sister bar to the East End fave, this West End version plays host to a more studenty crowd as well as weekend DJs. The Tap, 1055 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-339 0643. Mon-Thu 1200-2300, Fri, Sat 1200-2400, Sun 1230-2300. Classic student haunt, within easy skiving distance of the university. Convivial atmosphere, very cheap food and a good selection of ales on tap are all major attractions. Tennents, 191 Byres Rd, T 0141-341 1024. Big, no-nonsense, old West End favourite, serving a range of fine ales and about 15 different malt whiskies to a genuinely mixed crowd. Its also a great place for a chat (no music) and some very cheap food. Uisge Beatha, 232 Woodlands Rd, T 0141-564 1596. The water of life is one of those pubs where you go for a wee drink and youre still there many hours later, the days plans in ruins around your feet. Looks and feels like a real Highland hostelry. Cosy and welcoming and serving ridiculously cheap food. Scottish in every sense, and 135 whiskies to choose from too.
