Buzzing café-bar housed in a magnificent 18th century building in the heart of the Merchant City. Traditional Scottish and French dishes served with flair. Outrageously good value. Merchant City café/bar with extra seating out in the old Fruitmarket courtyard, a popular venue with local office workers. Great contemporary café in a former church offering everything from fishcakes to savoury vegetarian tart sermons not on the menu. Part of the Glasgow Film Theatre (see Entertainment) this well preserved arty, art deco café is definitely worth knowing about, even if youre not a movie buff. Its a great cheap lunch venue, especially for vegetarians, with hearty soups, toasties and no nonsense slabs of cake on offer good celeb spotting potential too. The Doocot Café and Bar, The Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell La, T 0141-221 1821. Theres a 1950s retro look at this café on the top of the Lighthouse high above the shopping frenzy in the streets below. Stop for soups, sandwiches and light meals before immersing yourself in the world of architecture. Miss Cranstons Tearooms, 33 Gordon St, T 0141-204 1122. You could miss this traditionally run tea-shop as its hidden above a bakers shop, but its worth seeking out if you fancy something rather more genteel than a skinny cappuccino on the run. This is the place to come for a full blown afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones, cakes, milk in jugs and gallons of tea. Starbucks at Borders, 98 Buchanan St, T 0141-222 7700. Mon-Sat 0830-2200, Sun 1000-2000. Handy Starbucks inside Borders bookshop. Good for those who cant tear themselves away from the books, and it also offers fantastic people-watching potential if you grab a seat overlooking the floor below. As youd expect there are plenty more Starbucks outlets scattered throughout the city.
