Dotted Line

Starbucks at Borders, 98 Buchanan St, T 0141-222 7700. Mon-Sat 0830-2200, Sun 1000-2000. Handy Starbucks inside Borders bookshop. Good for those who can’t tear themselves away from the books, and it also offers fantastic people-watching potential if you grab a seat overlooking the floor below. As you’d expect there are plenty more Starbucks outlets scattered throughout the city.

Where the Monkey Sleeps, 182 West Regent St, T 0141-226 3406. Mon-Sat 0700-1900, Sat 1000-1800. This is a relaxed exhibition space and trendy café run by former art students. Relax on a comfy sofa, read the paper and tuck into a bagel or a sandwich. Exhibits and sells works of new artists, including graduates of Glasgow and London schools of art.

Willow Tea Rooms, 217 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-3320521. Mon-Sat 0900-1630, Sun 1200-1530. A careful recreation of the original Miss Cranston’s Tearooms, secreted away above a jeweller’s and designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It's filled with many of his original features and looks striking with its high backed chairs. Most visitors come here for the design, but they also offer a selection of sandwiches and cakes, as well as hot meals. There’s also a sister branch at 97 Buchanan St (T 0141-2045242. Mon-Sat 0930-1700, Sun 1200-1700), which is licensed. No smoking area.

The Bay Tree, 403 Great Western Rd, T 0141-334 5898. Mon-Sat 0930-2100; Sun 1000-2000. Rather basic, but good value, self-service café serving food with a Middle Eastern emphasis. Come for a fry-up or something more exotic.

Brasserie Metro, 8 Cresswell La, T 0141-338 8131. Mon-Sat 0800-1800; also opens Sun. Big and bright West End café just off Byres Rd that’s popular with students. Wide-ranging menu makes it a good, cheap choice for lunch with things like homemade soup, cauliflower bake or fish cakes. No smoking area.

Grassroots Café, 97 St Georges Rd, T 0141-3330534. Daily 1000-2200. Vegetarian and vegan organic food at this cool, intimate café near St Georges Cross. There are strong North African and Middle Eastern influences which provide a welcome change for jaded vegetarian palates. Lots of soups and salads and filling main courses like tajines with apricot, lemon and pistachio couscous or no nonsense veggie bangers with mash.

Grosvenor Café, 31 Ashton La, T 0141-339 1848. Mon, Tue 0900-1600; Wed-Sat 0900-2200; Sun 1000-1800. Behind Hillhead Underground. A perennial favourite with local students who come for the wide selection of cheap food (filled rolls, soup, burgers, pizzas, etc). Cosy and friendly atmosphere.

Little Italy, 205 Byres Rd, T 0141-339 6287. Mon-Thu 0800-2200, Fri, Sat 0800-1145, Sun 1000-2200. A convenient and buzzy refuelling stop that never seems to close. Great pizza and strong espresso. A favourite with everyone from West End trendies to scruffy students.

North Star, 108 Queen Margaret Dr, T 0141-946 5365. Mon 0800-1800, Tue-Thu 0800-1900, Fri, Sat 0800-2000, Sun 1100-1800. Portugese café/deli that has an extremely loyal following. Good speciality treats.
