North Star, 108 Queen Margaret Dr, T 0141-946 5365. Mon 0800-1800, Tue-Thu 0800-1900, Fri, Sat 0800-2000, Sun 1100-1800. Portugese café/deli that has an extremely loyal following. Good speciality treats.

Otago, 61 Otago St, T 0141-337 2282. Daily 1100-2200. There’s a cool, minimalist look to this Mediterranean bistro where the West Ends boho population come to read the newspapers and chat. The menu offers lots of veggie choices like asparagus risotto and there are filling meaty mains too. There’s a good selection of wines on offer.

Tinderbox, 189 Byres Rd, T 0141-339 3108. Mon-Sat 0745-2300, Sun 0845-2300. Coffee shop which looks and feels more like a style bar. Great coffee, good magazines to read and a large no smoking, child-friendly area.

TchaiOvna, 42 Otago La, T 0141-357 4524. Daily 1100-2300. Laid back Czech inspired café, where you’ll find a relaxed boho atmosphere, light meals and a huge selection of teas to choose from.

University Café, 87 Byres Rd, T 0141-339 5217. Mon-Thu 0900-2200; Fri, Sat 0900-2230, Sun 1000-2200. A gloriously authentic Italian art deco café, where grannies and students sit shoulder-to-shoulder enjoying real cappuccino, great ice cream and good, honest and cheap mince and tatties, pie and chips, sausage rolls, gammon steak and all the other golden oldies.

Art Lovers’ Café, Bellahouston Park, Drumbreck Rd, T 0141-353 4779. Daily 1000-1700. Housed in CRM’s exquisite House for an Art Lover. A nice place to chill and a good selection of light snacks and hot or cold meals. Some imaginative veggie choices like roasted parsnip, spinach and parmesan risotto, as well as tasty meaty mains. No smoking.

Nardini’s, on the Promenade, Largs, T 01475-674555. Daily 2230 in summer. Don’t leave town without visiting this authentic 1950s Italian café. It’s an institution and is reckoned by some to be the best café in Scotland. Though it has changed hands in recent years, it still pushes all the right buttons. The ice cream is worth the trip alone but it also does good Italian food and coffee.

West End Café, 1-3 Gallowgate, Rothesay, T 01700-503596. Easter-Sep 1200-1400 and 1600-2400 (closed Mon). It is an absolute must while you are on Bute to sample the superb fish and chips at this award-winning chippie. It’s open for takeaways all year round, and for sit-down meals. Phone ahead from your hotel or B&B to avoid the massive queues.
