Glasgow - Eating And Drinking

Dotted Line

Even though such culinary delights as the deep-fried Mars bar, deep-fried pizza, deep-fried black pudding and deep-fried Cadbury’s creme egg were all invented here, they certainly don’t reflect the quality and variety of the food on offer – Glasgow has undergone a culinary renaissance and it continues unabated.

The city has always boasted a wide selection of ethnic eateries, particularly Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants, and these have been joined by a growing number of cuisines from around the globe. Glasgow reflects the move away from strict culinary national boundaries and towards a more international style, with its many bistros and brasseries which feature wide-ranging menus. These also tend to be more lively and informal places to eat, as well as offering good value for money – and this is one of the city’s great strengths. Compared to other cities (ie London), you can eat well and in some style without breaking the bank.

Scottish cuisine is well represented, reflecting the trend of marrying traditional Scottish ingredients with continental and international flavours and styles. Meats like venison, pheasant, lamb and beef are often on the menu, and haggis may feature too. Fresh local fish is widely available, sometimes fashionably seared, sometimes served in an unusual sauce, and sometimes just fried with chips.

Vegetarians are well catered for with most places offering substantial and imaginative vegetarian options.

Glasgow prides itself on its café society and many of the new designer cafés make it seem more like Barcelona or Greenwich Village than the west coast of Scotland. There are many authentic Italian cafés where you can enjoy a fry-up washed down with frothy cappuccino. The city is also the home to the tearoom and those who insist on their mid-afternoon fix won’t be disappointed.

The greatest concentration of eating places is around Byres Road in the West End, which is heavily populated by students and therefore the best area for cheap, stylish places to eat. The Merchant City contains most of the designer brasseries, which are more expensive, but many of the bars serve good food at reasonable prices. Some of the places listed also appear in the Bars and clubs chapter.
