Glasgow may not be able to boast such a dazzling event as the world famous Edinburgh Festival, but it doesnt like to be overshadowed by its arch rival in the east, and so it has a few notable festivals of its own. The atmospheres always good and theyre a good way of meeting visitors to the city as well as local people. A strong musical heritage and great choice of venues means that there are several well-established music festivals to choose from, ranging from Celtic Connections which not surprisingly celebrates all types of celtic music - to a Jazz Festival. Never a city to rest on its laurels, Glasgow also has some recent additions to its cultural scene with an International Comedy Festival and a Merchant City Festival. Theres also a lively celebration of lesbian and gay culture in the annual Glasgay festival. Booking in advance for major events is recommended, but its still possible to leave things until you arrive in the city and see what tickets you can get. A useful website is http://www.summerinthecity.org which goes online around June and gives details of summer events. Otherwise check out http://www.seeglasgow.com.
