Dotted Line

Glasgow has a number of venues for classical music and opera and is the home of Scottish Opera, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The city attracts talent from all over the world. Traditional Scottish music is performed by the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra (http://www.sfo.org.uk) who perform at various venues in Glasgow to raise funds for a wide variety of charitable causes.

As for contemporary rock, pop and indie music, The Barrowlands, with its old-ballroom style décor and incredible atmosphere, has seen an amazing selection of bands over the years including home-grown talent as well as international bands. The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) offers a larger arena-style venue for bigger tours.

The best places to see smaller gigs are at the Garage, Cathouse, King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, 13th Note and Nice’n’Sleazy’s, all of which play host to signed and unsigned talent from Glasgow and further afield.

The larger and well-known gigs cost anything from £10-25 in the SECC, Barrowlands and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with the smaller gigs in bars ranging from free entry to about £10 for bigger bands.

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-353 8080, http://www.grch.com. Prestigious venue for orchestras and big-name rock, pop and soul acts.

City Hall, Candleriggs, T 0141-287 5024, http://www.glasgow.gov.uk. Another fine concert hall that also hosts the BBC Symphony Orchestra every season. Classical concerts are also occasionally performed here by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (T 0131-5576800, http://www.sco.org.uk).

Henry Wood Hall, 73 Claremont St, T 0141-225 3555, http://www.rsno.org.uk. A classical music venue set in a former church that is now home to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and also hosts a variety of concerts.

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, 100 Renfrew St, T 0141-332 4101, http://www.rsamd.ac.uk. Varied programme of international performances.

Theatre Royal, Hope St, T 0141-332 3321, http://www.theatreroyalglasgow.com. The home of the generally excellent Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet, also regularly hosts large-scale touring theatre and dance companies and orchestras.
