Dotted Line

£££ Etain, The Glass House, Springfield Court, T 0141-225 5630. Mon-Fri 1200-1430, 1900-2200; Sat, 1900-2200, Sun 1200-1500. This is Terence Conran’s fine dining restaurant, which is already receiving good reviews. The menu features fresh, seasonal produce and might include a dish like roast pigeon with puy lentils, or seared scallops with bacon and black pudding.  Great choice of cheeses too. Set lunches make it a more affordable option than in the evening.

£££ Rogano’s, 11 Exchange Pl, T 0141-248 4055. Daily 1200-1430, 1830-2230. A Glasgow culinary institution. Designed in the style of the Cunard liner, Queen Mary, and built by the same workers. Looks like the set of a Hollywood blockbuster and you’ll need a similar budget to pay the bill, but the seafood is truly sensational. Downstairs is Café Rogano (Sun-Thu 1200-1430, 1830-2230), which offers a less stylish alternative, but it’s a lot easier on the pocket.

££ Arta, 13-19 Walls St, T 0141-5522101. Wed, Thu and Sun 1700-2300, Fri, Sat 1700-2400. Bar open later. Sister restaurant to the Corinthian . Spanish restaurant serving tapas, tortillas and meaty stews. Housed in the Old Cheese market, the décor is faux-Spanish with mosaics and huge candelabras.

££ Café Gandolfi, 64 Albion St, T 0141-552 6813. Mon-Sat 0900-2330, Sun 1200-2330. The first of Glasgow’s style bistro/brasseries back in 1979, which almost makes it antique by today’s contemporary design standards. The unusual wooden furniture was designed by Tim Stead. Still comfortably continental, relaxed and soothing. Good place for a snack or a leisurely late breakfast.

££ City Merchant, 97-99 Candleriggs, T 0141-553 1577. Mon-Sat 1200-2230. The best of Scottish meat and game but it’s the fish and seafood which shine. Absolutely superb. It’s at the top end of this price range but their 2- and 3-course set menus (available 1200-1830) are more affordable and excellent value. Very popular and a good atmosphere. No smoking area.

££ Corinthian, 191 Ingram St, T 0141-552 1101. Mon-Thu 1700-2230, Fri, Sat, 1700-2300, bar open from 1200 Mon-Sat, 123- on Sun. There’s a sense of occasion about going to the popular Corinthian.  There are several bars, a nightclub and private club as well as the restaurant.  Food tends to be traditional with a modern twist and the puddings are very good.

££ Cuba Norte, 17 John St, T 0141-552 3505. Mon- Sun 1200-2300. As the name suggests there’s a Latin American feel here, not just in the food but in the music. There’s even dancing every night. Come just for cocktails or for a meal.

££ The Dhabba, 44 Candleriggs, T 0141-553 1249. Daily 1200-2300. Stylish new Indian restaurant with lots of polished wood and gleaming cutlery.  It offers authentic Northern Indian cuisine.

££ Frango, 15 John St, T 0141-552 4433. Mon-Sat 1200-2230. Conveniently located in the Italian Centre this place is popular with business people and fashion-conscious shoppers. There’s an all-day menu, with lots of fish dishes such as fish soup, tuna, and monkfish. Pudding might include a scrummy rosemary panacotta.  Relaxed atmosphere.
