Dotted Line

££ Frango, 15 John St, T 0141-552 4433. Mon-Sat 1200-2230. Conveniently located in the Italian Centre this place is popular with business people and fashion-conscious shoppers. There’s an all-day menu, with lots of fish dishes such as fish soup, tuna, and monkfish. Pudding might include a scrummy rosemary panacotta.  Relaxed atmosphere.

££ Mao, 84 Brunswick St, T 0141-564 5161. Mon-Fri 1200-2300, Sat 1200-2330, Sun 1300-2200. Far Eastern and Oriental food in slick merchant city outlet. The décor features brightly coloured furniture and prints and fusion flavours are exciting.

££ Metropolitan, Merchant Sq, Candleriggs, T 0141-552 9402. This is a stylish, but slightly self consciously trendy, restaurant and bar – leather sofas and fashion tv on wide screen tv in the bar, and a sleek clientele. You can drink outside in the covered courtyard that was the old market. Food is contemporary with dishes like jerk chicken, steaks and pastas.

££ Schottische, 16-18 Blackfriars St, T 0141-5527774. Tue-Sat 1830-2300. Upstairs from the legendary Babbity Bowsters . Good French/Scottish food at very affordable prices. They use seasonal produce and you might find venison as well as haggis on the menu, so if you’ve never tried it, here’s your chance. Make sure you leave enough room for their diet-busting puddings.

££ Smiths of Glasgow, 109 Candleriggs, T 0141-552 6539. Tue-Sat 0930-2200, Sun, Mon 0930-1730. There’s a French tang to this Merchant City favourite which functions as a café by day and a restaurant by night. Dishes might include rump of lamb in gravy.

££ Strata, 45 Queen St, T 0141-2211888. Daily 1200-2200, bar open later. One of the city’s coolest style bars, with good, Mediterranean style food too.  Good place for a tasty sandwich or burger at lunchtime, or more unusual fare (ostrich has been spotted on the menu) in the evening.

£ Bargo, 80 Albion St, T 0141-553 4771. Mon-Sat 1200-1900, Sun 1230-1900 (bar open until 2400). Impressively stylish designer bar with lots of pinewood and portholes, serving excellent value bar snacks and meals of superior quality. Definitely a place to be seen in and flaunt your new Versace purchases.

£ The Italian Kitchen, 64 Ingram St, T 0141-572 1472. Tue-Sun 1200-2200. Newly opened Italian restaurant in the heart of the Merchant City. The décor features shiny wooden floors and red leather seats, and there’s a large, wood-fired oven for authentic pizzas.

£ Khublai Khan, 26 Candleriggs, T 0141-552 5646. Daily 1730-late. The idea at this Mongolian restaurant is that you make your own dishes by selecting ingredients from a range of meats, vegetables, herbs and spices. Entertaining stuff provided you don’t get too carried away with the spices.
