The aromatic crispy duck is particularly good. Those on a tight budget can also indulge themselves, with half price main courses before 1900 Wed-Fri and all night Mon/Tue. BYOB.

££ Baby Grand, 3-7 Elmbank Gardens, T 0141-248 4942. Open Mon-Thu 0800-2400, Fri 0800-0200, Sat 1000-0200, Sun 1000-2400. Chic jazz-café offering good bistro-style food when most other places have shut up shop. There’s a changing ‘specials’ menu and a laid back atmosphere. Enjoy late night drinks and food and soothing jazz piano.

££ Bleu Ginger, 441 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-3325999. Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1730-0200, Sun 1730-0200. This new Chinese restaurant offers classy dining in elegant surroundings – a large chandelier hangs from the ceiling and contemporary prints line the walls. Lots of ‘chilli’ dishes and several choices for veggies.

££ Bouzy Rouge, 111 West Regent St, T 0141-221 8804. Sun-Thu 1200-2130, Fri, Sat 2400-2230. Is one of a chain offering two types of dining – casual and gourmet. Gourmet choices are things like posh Scottish (venison and the like), casual has steaks and veggie options. Sleek wooden interior.

££ Fratelli Sarti, 121 Bath St, T 0141-204 0440. Mon-Sat 0800-2230, Sun 1200-2230. Everything you’d expect from a great Italian restaurant, and a lot more besides – it’s a real Glasgow institution, practically everyone in the city must have eaten here at some time. Good value food in authentic Italian surroundings – lots of chatter and bustle. Their pizzas are delicious. No wonder it’s always busy – be warned, service can be slow. No smoking area.

££ The Green Room, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 2 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-353 8000. Open performance days only 1700-2130. Much more than a good place to eat before the show. A superb restaurant in its own right where you can indulge in the finest of Scottish produce at reasonable prices. Good vegetarian selection. No smoking area.

££ Modern India, 51 West Regent St, T 0141-331 1980. Mon-Thu 1200-2330, Fri, Sat 1200-0100, Sun 1600-2330. This is a contemporary Indian restaurant featuring many dishes from Goa.  Business lunches are a great bargain.

£ Canton Express, 407 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-332 0145. Daily 1200-0400. No-frills, cheap and filling Chinese fast food at any hour of the day or night. Popular with students and clubbers in need of an immediate monosodium glutamate hit.

£ Glasgow Noodle Bar, 482 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-333 1883. Daily 1200-0500. Handy central location for this refuelling stop serving Oriental fast food that you eat from disposable containers with plastic chopsticks or forks. Very cheap chow and great after a heavy night on the town.
