Dotted Line

£ Glasgow Noodle Bar, 482 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-333 1883. Daily 1200-0500. Handy central location for this refuelling stop serving Oriental fast food that you eat from disposable containers with plastic chopsticks or forks. Very cheap chow and great after a heavy night on the town.

£ Tempus at the CCA, 350 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-332 7959. Daily 1100-2400 (last order for food 2130). Set in the recently refurbished Centre for Contemporary Arts, this café/restaurant serves contemporary Scottish dishes. The menu is flexible and you can just drop in for a coffee and a snack if you don’t want lunch. Upstairs (also reached via Scott St) is the CCA Bar which serves sandwiches and coffees. It is notable for its décor, designed by artist Jorge Pardo, which is a psychedelic creation with lots of bright colours and carved wood.

£ Wee Curry Shop, 7 Buccleuch St, T 0141-353 0777. Mon-Sat 1200-1400, 1730-2230. Son of Mother India . Small in every sense except flavour and value. Quite simply the best cheap curry this side of Mumbai, in a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. Good vegetarian options and incredible value 3-course buffet lunch. BYOB.

£££ The Buttery, 652 Argyle St, T 0141- 221 8188. Tue-Fri 1200-1400, 1900-2200; Sat 1800-2200. Victoriana abounds in this old favourite with its clubby atmosphere. Consistently rated as one of the best in the city, with an emphasis on the finest Scottish fish, seafood and game. Good high-quality wine list.

£££ The Cabin, 996-998 Dumbarton Rd, T 0141-5691036. Tue-Sat, lunch Tue-Fri 1200-1400. Closed Mon/Sun. BYOB. If your idea of a good night out is piles of the finest Scottish food followed by a post-dinner cabaret by Wilma, the legendary singing waitress, then this is the place for you. A truly one-off experience and great fun. Not to be missed. The only drawback is there’s only one dinner sitting, at 1930.

£££ The Cook’s Room, 13 Woodside Crescent, T 0141-353 0707. Mon-Sat 1200-1430 and 1800-2200. This former southside favourite has now moved to the West End, taking over Nick Nairn’s old premises. They serve good modern Scottish food in clean blue and cream surroundings. Look out for dishes like tarragon chicken and leave room to try their great puddings. Sunday brunch is good value and you can eat more cheaply at lunchtime than in the evening.

£££ Dining Room, 41 Byres Rd, T 0141 339 3666. Acclaimed, imaginative food at this West End restaurant. Mains might include a creamy asparagus and pea risotto, and warm carrot cake with marmalade ice cream for dessert.

£££ La Parmigiana, 443 Great Western Rd, T 0141-334 0686. Mon-Sat 1200-1430, 1800-2300. This sophisticated, very traditional, Italian restaurant is one of Glasgow’s finest eating establishments. Mains might include sausage ragu with polenta – you don’t nip in here for a quick pizza. Recommended for a special occasion.

£££ Stravaigin, 28-30 Gibson St, T 0141-334 2665. Tue-Thu, 1700-2230, Fri-Sun 1200-1430, 1700-2300. Hard to define but difficult to resist. An eclectic mix of   flavours and prime Scottish ingredients to produce the most sublime results. Expensive but you won’t get better value for money in this category and it totally justifies its many awards. Upstairs is a café-bar where you can sample some of that fabulous food at more affordable prices.
