An eclectic mix of   flavours and prime Scottish ingredients to produce the most sublime results. Expensive but you won’t get better value for money in this category and it totally justifies its many awards. Upstairs is a café-bar where you can sample some of that fabulous food at more affordable prices.

£££ Two Fat Ladies, 88 Dumbarton Rd, T 0141-3391944. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1730-2230; Sun 1730-2230. Fantastic fish and seafood in the humblest of surroundings, tucked away in an unfashionable corner of the West End. Prepare your tastebuds for smoked haddock, baked sole or scallops.

'The Chip', as it’s known locally, is a ground-breaking, multi award-winning restaurant and still the city’s favourite place for Mctastic Scottish food, especially venison and seafood. All served in a plant-filled, covered courtyard patio. Upstairs is their bistro, Upstairs at the Chip (daily 1200-2300), which doesn’t make you feel quite as special but is much easier on the wallet.

££ Air Organic, 36 Kelvingrove St, T 0141-5645200. Sun-Thu and Sun 1200-2200, Fri-Sat 1200-2230. Ultra-cool, futuristic looking bistro in the West End. The type that could only really exist in Glasgow. Styled on Miami International Airport and serving organic and orgasmic fusion food like prawn and lemon linguine. Try their Thai or Japanese offerings. No smoking area.

££ The Bothy, 11 Ruthven La, T 0141-334 4040. Daily 1200-2400. New kid on the culinary block.  Owned by the same people at Corinthian, it offers traditional Scottish food in rustic surroundings – all done in a modern, ironic West End sort of way.

££ Brel, 39-43 Ashton La, T 0141-3424966. Daily 1200-2230, bar open later. Another stylish continental eating establishment in Glasgow’s hippest culinary quarter.
