An arty West End crowd fills this eaterie, named after a novel by 19th-century Russian writer Ivan Goncharov. That’s pretty well where the East European theme ends as food is more modern bistro style with some more exotic dishes like Japanese-style chicken, as well as mains like pasta and burgers. The Pakistani food’s imaginative and there’s loads of choice. Worth trying one of the house specialities like chilli and garlic nishilee. Housed in a converted Victorian train station, this is most definitely the “rail” thing. It’s stylish and comfortable, serves excellent Mediterranean food (there are strong Moroccan influences) and has great service. Good vegetarian selection, too. No smoking area.
