For many years the most famous theatre in Glasgow was the Glasgow Empire, a variety theatre whose audience had forthright ways of voicing their displeasure with acts – particularly with comics. These days audiences are more polite and the city has a thriving theatre scene where you have the opportunity to see everything from traditional panto to contemporary plays.

King’s Theatre, 297 Bath St, T 0141-248 5153, http://www.glasgow.gov.uk. The city’s main theatre which stages big-name touring musicals, the annual panto and a number of amateur performances.

Theatre Royal, Hope St, T 0141- 332 3321, http://www.theatreroyalglasgow.com. The home of Scottish Opera. It also stages major productions by Scottish Ballet and visiting companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre.

Citizens’ Theatre, 119 Gorbals St, T 429 0022, http://www.citz.co.uk">http://www.citz.co.uk. A famous theatre which has a Victorian auditorium and two modern studio theatres. The resident theatre company presents British and European classic plays, as well as popular Christmas shows.

Pavilion Theatre, 121 Renfield St, T 0141-332 1846. Victorian theatre continuing the Glasgow tradition of staging variety shows. Seating 1,800, it stages an annual panto, musicals and also hosts an extraordinary range of visiting performers from hypnotists to American wrestlers. Over the years audiences have seen acts as varied as Lulu, Shania Twain, Billy Connolly, Jim Davidson, Bernard Manning, Ardal O’Hanlon and Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown.

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, 100 Renfrew St, T 0141-332 4101. Has a varied programme of international performances. This is Glasgow’s major theatre school and puts on work by its various student companies. Cheap tickets for students.

The Arches, 30 Midland St, T 0141-565 1023. In the railway arches under Central station. Presents more radical and experimental theatre. Also home to one of the city’s major clubs .

Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), 350 Sauchiehall St, T 0141-352 4900. Hosts contemporary dance and theatre, as well as staging various art exhibitions.

Citizens’ Theatre, 119 Gorbals St, T 0141-429 0022, http://www.citz.co.uk">http://www.citz.co.uk. Just across the river. Home to some of the UK’s most exciting and innovative dramatic performances. Main auditorium and two smaller studios. Big discounts for students and the unemployed.
