Havana must be one of the most culturally rich and exciting cities in the world, leading the field in the quality and quantity of its home grown music, dance, ballet, cinema and other artistic spheres. The Revolution encouraged the arts to develop a national identity but under the cloak of censorship. There is a national dance company, symphony orchestra and opera. International companies and artistes visit regularly, often as part of a festival of drama, music or dance. Events take place during the day as well as far into the night so youll never be short of something to do or see. There are also performances for children, such as puppets at the Teatro Guiñol. Cuban cinema is unbeatable and you will probably be able to catch up with some golden oldies as well as the latest releases. The newspaper, Opciones, has a listing of whats on as does Cartelera, available free of charge, every Thursday, and found at most hotel receptions. Radio Taíno FM 93.3, English and Spanish language tourist station, gives details of venues and Cuban bands playing, particularly in the programme El Exitazo Musical del Caribe from 1500-1800.
