The year in Havana is crammed with festivals. The most popular events are the cinema and jazz festivals, but there are ballet and contemporary dance festivals as well as celebrations of folk music, classical music, guitar and boleros, etc. There are no national religious festivals, although you will find some patron saints days celebrated (often linked to Santería) and Easter is an important time.
Public holidays commemorate political and historical events and are marked by rallies in the Plaza de la Revolución. Carnival has been resurrected, although it is not held at the traditional pre-Lenten time. Parades and competitions take place over several weekends in the summer instead.
