Dotted Line

New Year is celebrated with great fanfare, largely because it coincides with Liberation Day, marking the end of the Batista dictatorship, on 1 January 1959. There is lots of music and dancing, and general merriment, washed down with copious quantities of rum.

Cuballet de Invierno (6 January-2 February 2003), Folkcuba and Cubadanza (6-17 January 2003) are twice-yearly dance festivals. For Cuballet de Invierno contact Laura Alonso, of Prodanza, T 2608610, prodanza@cubarte.cult.cu; for Folkcuba, the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba, Juan García, T 8334560, cnae@min.cult.cu; Cubadanza, Cuban Contemporary Dance, Miguel Iglesias, T 8796410, cnae@min.cult.cu
