Havana is not a great shopping experience and you will not find trendy areas with designer boutiques. The US trade embargo and lack of foreign exchange means imports are often in short supply although shops are improving. The main souvenirs to take home have to be rum, cigars and maybe coffee. Caracol shops in hotels and in La Habana Vieja and Vedado sell tourist items, rum and cigars. Cigars can often be seen being made in hotel lobbies or cigar lounges, where you can also buy them. Handicrafts are being developed for tourists and markets in La Habana Vieja and Vedado hold an overwhelming amount of stock as Cubans cash in on the chance to earn dollars. There is a considerable amount of art of varying degrees of worth, but you may pick up a bargain. If you are a serious collector, go straight to the galleries. Taking art out of the country requires a special licence; galleries and vendors in the market can give you the necessary stamp. There are no delis stocking Cuban specialities, but farmers markets, agromercados, sell delicious tropical fruits and vegetables in season at rock bottom prices in pesos.
