Steep Hong Kong rents mean that space is at a premium, so you generally dont get much for your money although there are endless choices. Hotels range from opulent harbour view suites in Central, to a cheap bed in a cupboard-sized room in Chungking Mansions, with many in between. As a general rule of thumb, most of the cheapest rooms are around Nathan Road between Tsim Sha Tsui and Mongkok, still accessible to shopping and eating areas by a short bus ride. The best area for nightlife is between Central and Wan Chai, and most of the top hotels are near the waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central offering great luxury, at a price. Most mid-range hotels favoured by tour groups and business travellers lack style and individuality, but are functional and well-located. Most of the top and mid-range hotels offer huge discounts throughout the year, often more than 50% off, either directly through the hotel, booking agents or websites, so check out all options if booking in advance. Prices go up and availability down during Chinese New Year, October and the huge Guangzhou fair in April, and Macau hotel prices leap at weekends.
