Famous for its margheritas and martinis, this is where the chic crowd lets its hair down and may even dance round their Prada handbags. During the week its a comfortable wine bar, on Fri and Sat the DJ plays funk and soul. Tue and Wed are Manicure nights: a manicure and two Martinis for $200. Relaxed informal setting, its blue walls are covered with calligraphy, courtesy of the King of Kowloon. Tasty Sichuan food is available at Yellow Door, downstairs. Attracts an arty, student, trendy crowd yet still one of the least pretentious bars in the area. Named after the June 4th Tiananmen Square killings (6/4), it has photographs, posters and flyers promoting independent artists and writers. Crowds spill out into the grubby courtyard at weekends. Tucked under the mid-levels escalator, this cosy and comfortable Irish pub spread across three floors serves up a hearty Irish breakfast and other traditional dishes, washed down with a wide variety of ales and stouts. This tiny former antique store still has a slight bordello feel with an air of faded decadence, through an inconspicuous entrance down an alleyway, but it attracts a hip crowd and has a friendly atmosphere. Wonderful little club for alternative arts, music, entertainment, food and drink. Fotogalerie has a tiny terrace and rooftop, packed on Fri nights, also serving food. For lovers of good wine (plus absinthe and $17,000 bottles of vintage Armanac) and lounging on comfy sofas, this small bar with its candlelight and tasteful furnishings is hard to find, so has rather an exclusive feel to it. In the heart of Central yet hidden away upstairs, Le Jardin has a garden setting which is something of a relief from the other chaotic bars in the area. Renowned for a jukebox which enhances, rather than detracts from, the classy atmosphere. Music Room Live, 2/F California Entertainment Building, 34-36 DAguilar St, Central, T 2845 8477. HH 1800-2100. Previously the Jazz Club and Bar, the newly formed venue has big names in international blues and jazz, as well as salsa, Cuban and R&B. In addition to the Live Room, theres the comfortable, velvety Velvet Lounge.
