For years it was Lan Kwai Fong, now the place is SoHo, (SOuth of HOllywood Road in Central), a new name and image for an old area. This is home to some of the sleekest bars adorned with dark wood and high ceilings, the trendiest clubs with chrome and glass, and the best-dressed night birds with Prada and Mui Mui. Wan Chai has always had a sleazier ambience, infamous for its plethora of hostess clubs and love hotels along Lockhart Road, but has cleaned up a little in recent years. Although still earthy, with a few hostess clubs, there is a trend for new bars whose snacks consist of tempura and satay, rather than cheese and onion crisps. Tsim Sha Tsui, with a high concentration of cheap hotels, has many watering holes more reminiscent of England or Australia. Drinking is expensive throughout the city (at least $35 for a standard drink), but bars do stay open late (around 0300 at weekends) and it is possible to drink and dance all night. Many bars have a dance floor with DJ at weekends, usually playing an unremarkable mix of soul, funk and R&B, and top hotel clubs often have an in-house Filipino band playing covers of soulful ballads.
While the bad news is that drinks are pricey, the good news is that most bars offer Happy Hours, usually 2-for-1, which often lasts most of the afternoon until early evening. In addition to those, many bars and clubs have Ladies Nights, one night of the week (Mon-Thu) with free standard drinks for women in order to entice more men. Check with HK Magazine or BC Magazine for details of both. The bars around Lan Kwai Fong and DAguilar Street are too numerous to list or recommend here, except for some tucked away which deserve a mention, but the area is tiny enough to wander around and see what catches your eye. NB HH = Happy Hour
