Popular with old ladies in the mornings prasticing tai chi, it’s hard to believe this is in Central. Simple noodles dishes, Chinese snacks, beer, and friendly service.

$ XTConICE Gelato, 45 Cochrane St, Central. 1200-2400 Sun-Tue, Thu; 1200-0400 Fri and Sat. This tiny Italian-style ice-cream store, near many bars and restaurants, boasts unusual combinations like ginger and cinnamon, toasted almond and green apple sorbet. Free samples in case you can’t decide.

$ Deli Bess, 160 Electric Rd, North Point, T 2512 8007. 0800-2000. A tiny friendly café making fresh sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes and toasties, washed down with a great selection of teas, coffees and juices. Simple and tasty.

$ Dai Pai Dong, 57 Shau Kei Wan St East. 0800-2000. Dirt cheap, lively dai pai dong, with basic noodle dishes (no English menu) ideal to fill up en route to the museums. Basic English spoken, can cook to request if vegetarian. No English name, but near the “Bonky Parking” sign.

$$ The Peninsula, Salisbury Rd, T 2920 2888. It seems sinful to place such a decadent establishment in the “café” section but high tea, complete with sandwiches and cakes, taken in the lobby, to the sweeping sounds from the string quartet, is a must.
