Although hugely popular during the 70s and 80s, domestic football has suffered a slump mainly because many good overseas players had to be sold, and the European matches are now broadcast regularly on Star TV the English Premier League being especially popular. The best two teams in the league are South China and Happy Valley, and two decent grounds are Hong Kong Football Club Stadium 3 Sports Rd, Happy Valley (adjacent to the racecourse), T 2576 8576, and Mongkok, 37 Flower Market Rd, Mongkok, T 2380 0188. Check the sports pages for fixtures. The biggest and most popular tournament is the Carlsberg Cup, played on the first three days of Chinese New Year at the National Stadium. Three national teams plus Hong Kong play a round-robin tournament, although the home side never pull any real surprises as they have problems in qualifying to get anywhere in the Asia Cup, let alone the World Cup.
