As over 70% of Hong Kong is too steep to be developed, the rocky coasts, woodlands and hills on the outlying islands and New Territories are perfect for hiking, which provides a great way of discovering the wilder side of life. The government has always developed and maintained trails and country parks, the most famous of which is the MacLehose Trail, and there are good guides and maps available of treks and walks of all lengths and standards. Two of the best are Exploring Hong Kongs Countryside - A Visitor's Companion (Edward Stokes) and South China Morning Post Hiking Guide which has great pull-out maps. The best time for hiking is between the cooler months of September and April.
