Qing Ming Festival (Mar/Apr) On this day most of Hong Kong flocks up to the burial areas in the New Territories for grave sweeping, to pay respect to their ancestors by cleaning the gravestones, clearing weeds and making offerings of wine and fruit. The roads, and all public transport, to these areas are congested and often delayed, so it is a difficult time for visitors to travel here.

Flower Show (2nd week Mar) Victoria Park, Causeway Bay, T 2723 6232, http://www.lcsd.gov.hk Inspiration to buy some gardening gloves: this 10-day festival spread over the park has extravagant floral displays from Hong Kong, China and around the world, with over 3,000 plants in the competition plus around 75 stalls selling horticultural products.

Macau Arts Festival http://www.icm.gov.mo Organized by the Cultural Institute, this is a showcase for most of Macau’s cultural associations, in a programme which includes a wide variety of music, dance, exhibitions, Chinese opera and theatre at different venues.
