The decor and romantic ambience enhance the superb food, which includes slow-roasted leg of lamb, roast suckling pig or deep-fried salted cod. The pavlova is divine.

Food is matched by classy black and gold decor and superb views. Favourites include quail rubbed with Thai spices, sautéed foie gras with ginger and mango and steamed sea bass in cardamom sauce.

$$$-$$ Alibi, 73 Wyndham St, Central, T 2167 1676. 1200-late. Above its very hip wine bar, the brasserie is small and chic with a tiny semi-covered terrace. Continental cuisine includes lobster salad, foie gras and steak tartar.

The Zen-like classy ambience is helped by a neon-topped long glass bar with large red lampshades hanging overhead, and dark wooden floors. Asian cuisine has a contemporary twist, like foie gras chiu chow style, crab meat with mango and avocado and curry mayonnaise, and baked seabass with pumpkin puree.

$$ 2 Sardines, 43 Elgin St, Central, T 2973 6618. 1200-1430 and 1800-2230. More than simply sardines, this offers a good range of classic French food. Small and relaxed.

A great place to experience Chinese food, its contemporary cuisine takes influences from all regions and it is set in a beautiful nostalgic interior of dark wood and birdcages complete with chirruping birds. Famous for its dim sum, and also offers great value lunch and dinner menus and a buffet brunch at weekends.

$$ El Pomposo, 4 Tun Wo Lane, Central, T 2869 7679. One of four adjacent small restaurants and bars in an alleyway, owned by the 1997 group. El Pomposo takes Spanish tapas and adds a twist, like the pork, apple and sage wontons, but also makes a grand seafood paella.

$$ Emporio Armani Caffe HK, 2/F Chater House, 11 Chater Rd, Central, T 2532 7722. 1130-2230. HH 1700-2000. Swathes of red plastic spiralling round the entrance hall set a designer kitsch tone: neon walls, crisp white tablecloths and high ceilings. The Italian chef conjures up delights such as deep-fried rock oysters with young spinach. Good value high tea.
