$$-$ American Peking Restaurant, 20 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai, T 2527 1000. An establishment that has been popular for years, ever since the American servicemen used the area for R&R in the 1950s. The cuisine is essentially Pekingese, so a great place to sample the famous Peking Duck. A huge restaurant with portions to match.

$ Healthy Mess Vegetarian Garden, 51-53 Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai, T 2527 3918. 1030-2300. With emphasis on the healthy, this popular informal restaurant serves a big selection of vegetarian Chinese dishes including dim sum (eat in or takeaway). It has a wide variety of fake meat, fried noodles with asparagus, water chestnuts and baby corn, thick tofu soup. Service is fast and friendly.

$ The Open Kitchen, 6/F Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Rd, Wan Chai, T 2827 2923. 1100-2200, 1100-2300 Fri. A self-service restaurant on the 6th floor commands a stunning view of the harbour, and the contemporary decor makes the most of it, with bar stools in front of the huge windows. Food is tasty and varied, with good-value pastas, steaks and grilled ostrich steak, and the Indian chef is best known for his laksa, a spicy thick soup.

$$ Brown, 18A Sing Woo Rd, Happy Valley, T 2891 8558. 1130-0200 Mon-Fri, 1000-0200 Sat-Sun. A rarity in these parts, with comfortable seating on the terrace and the perfect place to enjoy the huge brunch served at weekends. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere and a good menu for dinner.

$$ Hong Kong Old Restaurant, B/F Newton Hotel, 218 Electric Rd, North Point, T 2508 1081.

$ Beppu Menkan, 3 Pak Sha Rd, Causeway Bay, T 2881 0831.

$ Kung Tak Lam, G/F Lok Sing Centre, 51 Yee Wo St, Causeway Bay, T 2890 3127, 1/F 45-47 Carnarvon Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, T 2367 7881. One of the best vegetarian restaurants in town, specializing in Shanghainese cuisine which is heavy on breads, hotpots and dumplings. Their food contains no MSG and professes to be suitable for diabetics, using pesticide-free products, including organic honey and vegetables available for takeaway.

$ Saint’s Alp Teahouse, 470 Lockhart Rd, Causeway Bay, T 2147 0389.

$$ Café Deco, Peak Galleria, 118 Peak Rd, T 2849 5111. 1130-2400 Sun-Thu, 1130-0100 Fri and Sat. Best loved for its huge windows overlooking the harbour, the art deco-inspired interior looks clean and slick. Enjoy the city lights with sushi, oysters and Asian salads, or a lunchtime burger or baguette.
