MTR: Wong Tai Sin. A large bright restaurant with Buddhist-style Chinese vegetarian food, specializing in rich, fake meat dishes. One of Sai Kungs most popular restaurants, with a stylish modern interior of orange picture-filled walls, and a few tables outside opposite the old ladies playing cards. International menu and a highly recommended pavlova. $ Chung Chuk Lam Shanghai Restaurant, 24 Man Nin St, Sai Kung, T 2792 6883. 1100-2200. With many seafood restaurants in the area, this is a good alternative with cheap and hearty Shanghainese food, like dumpling, noodle and vegetarian dishes. A rather inconspicuous entrance, but dont be discouraged. $$ Golden Siam Thai Cuisine, B13 Tung Chung City Gate, Tung Chung, T 2109 4418. 1130-1600 and 1800-2300. A huge bright restaurant in the basement of a shopping centre. Curry crab, fried crab with ginger and green onion and deep fried pomfret with sweet chilli sauce, with plenty of meat and vegetarian dishes. $$-$ The Gallery, 26 Tong Fuk, Lantau, T 2980 2582. 1100-2230, closed Mon (open public holidays). With a Middle Eastern theme, the Gallery has a good selection of dips and starters and the ever-popular outdoor grill gets smoking for fish, steak and lamb rack. Mediterranean and South African cuisine on the waterfront. Popular at weekends and holidays (reservations advised). Snack on dips with their famous home-made bread and soup, or go for Dollas Braai, a huge portion (enough for two) of barbecued meats. $ Chung Lok Yuen, 14A Nam Chung, Tai O. 1100-2000. Turn left at the large bamboo structure on entering Tai O, take the left fork at the kids playground and past the Hoi Wan. Difficult to find, but worth it for good, no frills Cantonese food. On left is a sign in Chinese, red letters on yellow. Food is fresh and the boss speaks a little English. Specializes in fake meat and good fried rice. $ Fook Moon Lam, Tai O Market St. This restaurant gets the crowds in at weekends and is one of the most popular for fresh seafood. Large and cheerful with English menu.
