This famous pigeon restaurant has an idyllic setting overlooking Hung Shing beach, although not improved by ferocious mosquitoes, popular with weekend junk boat day trippers. Roast pigeon is served whole, and the minced quail also comes recommended. $ Sampan Seafood Restaurant, 16 Yung Shue Wan Main Street, T 2982 2388. 1000-2330. A large noisy and cheerful Chinese restaurant with tables near the waterfront, it serves up dim sum, clams, prawns and garoupa, the usual rice and noodle dishes, and roast pigeon. Packed on Sundays. $ Hing Lok Restaurant, 2A Pak Sha Sixth Lane. 1100-2230. One of several seafood restaurants on the waterfront of the island, all of which are popular and pretty similar, although everyone seems to have their favourite. The deep-fried squid and crab is good, and the wine is cheap. $ Hometown Teahouse, 12 Tung Wan Rd, T 2981 5038. 1200-2400. A quaint, cottage-like appearance, the teahouse has just a couple of tables on the narrow street and is run by an extremely gregarious Japanese lady, eager for passers-by to taste her fresh tea, sushi and bean-filled pancakes. $$ Flamingo, Hyatt Regency, 2 Estrada Almirante Marques Esparteiro, Taipa Island, T 831 234 ext. 1874. 1200-1500 and 1900-2300. One of Macaus hidden gems fantastic food in a peaceful, romantic location. Baked duck rice and coriander garlic sautéed clams, with a bottle of fine Portuguese red, tastes even sweeter when dining next to a pond of orange koi carp and ducks hoping for some of your freshly baked bread. Tranquillity with excellent service at a very reasonable price. $$ O Porto Interior, 259B Rua Da Almirante Sergio, T 967 770. 1200-2330. A bright friendly restaurant with interesting photographs on the walls and unpretentious decor. Serving Portuguese and Macanese dishes, it does great fried shrimps and curries, as well as a good selection of fresh fish.
