Plentiful, reliable and cheap, taxis ply most areas of Hong Kong. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon taxis are red, with a flag-fall of $15 and $1.40 for every subsequent 200m. Those in the New Territories are green, Lantau are blue, and both are a little cheaper. If taking a cab between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island you may be charged double the tunnel fee to pay for the car to return again. Cabbies are very good at putting on the meter and usually pretty honest but not many speak English so have your destination written in Chinese. Lantau has the worst taxi system in Hong Kong and painfully too few vehicles given the amount of visitors at weekends. If you are requiring a taxi from Lantau to the airport, the company try to charge an extra $70 for making an advance booking of more than 1 hour. If it is a Sunday or public holiday it may be better to get the airport bus, which is almost as quick.
