Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with significant seasonal changes: spring is warm and humid, averaging in the 70°s but cooler in the evenings. Summer can be unbearably hot, reaching 90° and a sweaty 90% humidity, which many try to avoid. The clear, sunny days of autumn, usually in the 70°s, are the most comfortable. Winter is the coldest and driest season with chilly evenings, and extra layers required if venturing to the higher altitudes, outlying islands or New Territories. Autumn and spring are the most popular tourist seasons, and around Chinese New Year (January/February) and Christmas are the busiest times to fly. May to November is typhoon season, although they usually occur during summer. The intense winds can, at worst, cause great destruction to buildings and lives, although this is rare and the damage is usually limited to ferries being cancelled.
