Watersports have enjoyed a revival and there are many beaches around Hong Kong revered in the international surfing scene, even though the water isn’t always that clean or exciting. Diving is possible, although there is far better diving elsewhere in Asia. Big Wave Bay, near Shek O, is surfers’ paradise and Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung has bigger waves, although is less accessible.

Chong Hing Water Sports Centre, Sai Kung, T 2792 6810. Sampans and pedal-boats for hire for those with watersport proficiency certificates.

Jockey Club Wong Shek Water Sports Centre, Sai Kung, T 2328 2311, and Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre, Tai Po, T 2665 3591, both hire canoes, dinghies and windsurfs for those with certificates. Training courses also offered.

Cheung Chau Windsurfing Centre, Hai Pak Rd, Tung Wan Beach, Cheung Chau, T 2981 8316. Where Lee Lai Shan learnt her trade. A popular and attractive beach.
