A sparking laboratory is how many commentators have described Lisbons contemporary arts scene. From experimental funky café theatres to rococo opera houses and the indigenous musical traditions of fado, Lisbon fuses its fine classical legacy with a new 21st-century dynamism. Portugals former colonies have bequeathed to the city an exhilarating soundtrack embracing everything from African mornas to Brazilian samba reggae. The passion and dedication of the Gulbenkian remains without peer. The foundation boasts an outstanding repertoire, nurturing a breed of talented home-grown composers. With the rise of the modern multiplex, cinema audiences have been swelling albeit on a diet of Hollywood pulp rather than on excellent local auteurs. A clutch of independent art house movies can still be found with excellent programmes. The fortnightly tourist office booklet Follow me Lisbon has arts and cultural listings. The municipal government publishes the monthly Agenda Cultural (http://www.hpv.pt/lisboa /agenda/outras.html), which has detailed listings (an English summary in summer) as well as reviews of exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances. Event tickets can be purchased at the Agência de Bilhetes para Espectáculos Públicos (ABEP), on the southeast corner of Praça dos Restauradores or at Fnac in the Almázens do Chiado shopping centre. The Diário de Notícias newspaper has film listings and also features reviews on Fridays of the latest releases.
