Halfway down the Elevador da Bica gradient, über-cool WIP (Work in Progress) moved to this site from across the street, where exposed brick and industrial pillars provided the backdrop for a hairdresser, streetwear shop and bar all-in-one. WIP bar is now a entity in its own right with a movida edge. Lisbon’s avant garde self-consciously sip cocktails while DJs play a superb mix of house, breakbeat, soul, drum’n’bass and reggae. This bubble-gum bar in the hip designer fashion emporium Vyrus attracts a young swaggering crowd. In the 1930s, this slice of Anglophilia was the haunt of stevedores and sailors, site of contraband and conspiracy. Nowadays, this butch bar still has more than a whiff of riverside decadence. Retro wood panelling is the backdrop for a louche ensemble of grizzled regulars, chugging pints of Guinness. All that is the Irish theme pub, with a genuinely affable ambience, squidgy sofas, dark wood panelling, live music from 2300, impromtu dancing and flowing Guinness. Tucked down a small passageway off Rua Garrett, the outside courtyard of this café-bar is a relaxing spot for an afternoon beer, away from the shopping crowds. In the evening, the minimalist interior is jammed with a chatty crowd of arty types, musing and boozing the evening into full swing. Snacks are also served. Its hip factor is on the rise, with up and coming DJs playing a mixed bag of breakbeat, funky house and electronica to a youthful crowd of gay and straights. Founded by Portugal’s first female clown, Tété, Chapitô is a performing-arts school, bar, restaurant and circus. After 2000, there are regular free shows from pantos to wrestling to tap dancing. The esplanade bar has breathtaking views over all Lisbon and is a great spot at sunset, while a decent array of international cuisine is served in the restaurant. Resident DJs Nuno Barroso and Miguel Cavaco host the “Do you remember me” party on the first Thursday of each month. There are spirited live music performances each night from samba to bossa nova to mellow jazz.
