Água no Bico, Rua São Marçal, 170, Príncipe Real, T 21 347 28 30. 2100-0200, closed Sun. Renowned throughout Portugal, this intimate bar is a well-established favourite. Despite the rather tacky, worn decor and older regulars, handy internet access makes it a popular traveller hangout.

Baliza, Rua da Bica Duarte Belo, Bairro Alto, T 21 347 87 19. 1300- 0200, Sat 1600- 0200, closed Sun. A humble canteen bar on the Elevador da Bica hill with steely decor and cool music. By day, it’s a laid-back coffee stop off serving decent pastries.

Bar 106, Rua São Marçal, 106, Príncipe real, T 21 342 73 73. This tiny bar draws a regular crowd of gay and straight Lisboetas meeting up early evening. The setting is rather spartan, but once you are in (ring the bell), it’s unpretentious and chatty.

Bric-a-Bar, Rua Cecilio de Sousa, 82, Príncipe real, T 21 342 89 71. 2100-0400. Spacious bar/disco in the gay centre of Príncipe Real, with a dance floor that gets packed late on and a choice of moody bars ranging from the cliquey to the cruisey.

Heróis, Calçada do Sacramento, 14, Chiado, T 21 342 00 76. 1000- 0200, Sun 1700-0200. Just off Rua Garrett, this rather frigid bar attracts a young wannabee crowd with its aspiring modernist decor, guest djs and decent cocktails. Downstairs, the café serves an inventive range of sandwiches and salads.

Keops, Rua da Rosa, 157, Bairro Alto, T 21 342 87 73. 2200-0400, closed Sun. With a Brazilian vibe and quirky Egyptian decor, this conspicuous Bairro Alto bar, undergoing something of a renaissance, is less democratic than most of its peers.

Portas Largas, Rua da Italaia, 154, Bairro Alto, T 21 346 63 79. This institution – with silver streamers, faded tasca decor and howling fado – is ostensibly gay but at some point every reveller in the city seems to end up drinking rough sangria at the foot of its huge wooden doors before piling into Frágil opposite.

Sétimo Céu, Travessa da Espera, 54, Bairro Alto, T 21 346 64 7. Daily 1400-0200. With minimalist decor, an upbeat Latin ambience and primmed and posey clientele, the ‘Seventh Heaven’ bar is the architypal Lisbon gay bar. The crowd is mixed, and the owners are Brazilian, ensuring a fine line in potent cocktails. During the afternoon, it’s less cliquey with lap top tapping and post-gym juicing.

Finalmente, Rua Palmeira, 38, Bairro Alto, T 21 347 9923. 2200-0600. Transvestite show at 0200 (winter), 0300 (summer). Appropriately named, most of Bairro Alto’s never-say-die vampires end up here in the small hours. The decor is worn and the clientele gnarled but its jam-packed disco and outrageous drag shows make it one of the most happening places in the city.

Frágil, Rua da Italaia, 126, Bairro Alto, T 21 346 95 78, http://www.fragil.com 2300- 0400, closed Mon and Tue. The predominantly gay club that put Lisbon on every clubber’s agenda.

Memorial, Rua Gustavo de Matos Sequeiro, 42, Príncipe Real, T 21 396 88 91. Tue-Sun 1100-0400. This is allegedly a lesbian-only club, although around a third of the clientele seem to be males on the pull. Entertainment includes drag shows, as well as camped up comedy perfomances.

Paradise Garage, Rua João Oliveira Miguéns, 38, T 21 324 34 00, http://www.paradisegarage.com 2300-0400. A mixed club which is a popular gay hangout, especially on Thursday nights, when guests from Heaven in London have been known to appear. At the weekend there’s an after-hours club, Dub Delight.

Trumps, Rua Imprensa Nacional, 104 B, Bairro Alto, T 21 397 10 59, http://www.trumps.pt 2300-0600, closed Mon. Rather erratic opening hours, mostly male crowd cruising upstairs in the intimate alcoves but also popular with lesbians. Floorspace challenged at the weekend on the dancefloor with people bouncing about to upbeat house on the dancefloor. Also has drag shows.
